I'm from the Vietnam era when almost every doctor in the country had served due to the draft and the residency deferment Berry Plan. It strikes me as sad that so many young people, and physicians in particular, have not experienced selfless service to country. It is a career dimension I have always cherished. This story reminds me of why. Thank you for sharing it.

Wow... what a decision.
It is said that heroes are born, not made, and making a decision like that tells me that this Soldier was, indeed, born a hero. For most, the first thought would be to drop or throw the grenade... not cradle it. My very sincere sympathies to the family, and thanks to those who tried to same this young man.

Got a little blurry there towards the end. Had to blink a few times. God bless them all.

Thank you for sharing. These kinds of things need to be heard by those who have no direct affiliation with soldiers, and even by those who do.

Also, you've probably heard of and possibly read this book (if you ever have time), but I read a book recently called Paradise General: Riding the Surge at a Combat Hospital in Iraq, by Dr. Dave Hnida. It was full of stories like the one above and very good as well. I find myself recommending it to anyone and everyone who will listen.

My heart goes out to your friend, the medical staff, the soldiers on the base, and that soldier's family. You made me cry. May God bless and comfort all of you.
